Part one of the Texas+ adventure featuring gators, my friends and real life cowboys.
In September 2024, my five friends and I went on a journey around the Lone Star State and a few miles beyond it. We started in Slovenia on the 5th of September with a 5-hour drive to Munich, where we had our flight. Since it was not our first rodeo ( the latter one was), we decided to go one day before our flight so we wouldn ‘t have to rush in the morning and could get a good night’s sleep. As often happens in travel circles, some things never go as planned. We received an email in the middle of the night that our flight was delayed, and then again. In the end, we took off around noon instead of 7 AM. But it was still a nice airport hotel, and the breakfast was really good.
Our flight to Dallas consisted of two parts: Munich to Heathrow and Heathrow to Dallas. As always, you get a bit anxious about the layover, but this time it went smoothly, with enough time to grab something to eat in the meantime. The flight to Dallas was calm and fast, but all the delays meant that we arrived in Texas at almost 11 PM instead of 4 PM, which was a bit wild considering we still had a 3-hour drive to Shreveport. Our “on – the – way” sleepover between Dallas and New Orleans.
We arrived in Louisiana’s biggest city on Friday afternoon, and the first thing to do was?! Karting. It doesn’t sound like a very standard activity in NOLA, but it was the only time we could go. As always, it was fun, and the track was a bit wet from the rain, so we were sliding around quite a lot. After that, we had dinner and then went to our Airbnb on MLK Boulevard. I won’t go into details, but spoiler alert, we spent only one night there instead of three.
The next morning, we woke up still under the impression of last night when some people wanted to come into our Airbnb. We went for a quick coffee, then packed our bags, got the hell out of there, and found ourselves a new place to stay. This time, it was in a rather nice part of the city called the French Quarter; some of you may have heard of it before. After settling in, we had some brunch and took a quick walk through Bourbon Street before my highlight of that day: the NFL match at Caesars Superdome, Saints vs. Panthers. The match itself was not much of a contest, but everything around it was quite an experience. So many people on the streets! Everybody was partying and having a good time. Since we are not party poopers, we joined in on the fun and ended up in the middle of the night back where we started, on famous Bourbon Street.
Our last full day in New Orleans started with probably one of the most exciting and unique experiences of my life so far. We went kayaking in the Manchac Swamp to see some gators. Our guide was awesome, and he made two hours on the water as interesting as it gets. We actually saw some alligators, mostly small ones, but we had some luck spotting one really big one chilling on a log until it jumped back into the water. After learning all about swamp life, we went back to the hotel to relax a little, and in the late afternoon, we took a stroll to the Mississippi waterfront, with the highlight being Jackson Square. We got a bit hungry and found a really good Asian establishment. The food was delicious, especially the soup. After filling our bellies, we slowly headed back through the artistic part of the French Quarter.
The next day, we got up early to pack and leave because Hurricane Francine was coming. We didn’t want to get caught in traffic or even worse, stranded. So, on the way back to Texas. More in the next one.
